By using PS5 in combination with the HDMI to USB adapter sold in our store (supporting 1080P/60Hz capture), you can easily achieve recording, live streaming or viewing of game scenes on your computer. Here is a detailed operation guide, applicable to most of our HDMI to USB adapter products (including USB-A or USB-C interface models):
Required equipment:
- PlayStation 5 console (PS5)
- An HDMI cable (for PS5 output)
- A USB data cable (for connecting the adapter to the computer)
- Our HDMI to USB adapter
- A computer (Windows or macOS, recommend using a newer configuration)
- OBS Studio or other capture software (free)
Hardware connection steps:
- One end of the original PS5 HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI OUT interface of PS5.
- The other end of the HDMI cable is inserted into the HDMI IN interface of the adapter.
- The USB interface (USB-A or USB-C) of the adapter is plugged into the USB 3.0 interface of the computer (it is recommended to use the direct port on the back of the computer to avoid USB Hub).
- Ensure that PS5 is turned on and outputs the picture.
PS5 settings requirements:
- Disable HDCP (to prevent black screen):
- In the PS5 main interface, go to [Settings] → [System] → [HDMI] → Disable [Enable HDCP]
- If HDCP is not disabled, OBS and other software will not be able to capture the PS5 picture and will display a black screen or no signal.
Set the output resolution to 1080p:
- [Settings] → [Screen and Video] → [Video Output] → [Resolution] Select "1080p"
- Most adapters do not support 4K input capture, so 1080p is the most stable solution.
- Software settings (using OBS Studio as an example):
- Install and open OBS Studio.
- Click the "+" button in the "Source" column → Select "Video Capture Device" → Name and click OK.
- Select a device in "Device" similar to "USB Video", "USB3.0 Video" or "HDMI Capture".
If you see the PS5 picture, it indicates a successful connection.
If you want to synchronize the sound, enable this device in the "Audio Mixer" and turn on the playback.
If there is no sound:
- Some models of the adapter do not support USB embedded audio capture;
- Try right-clicking the device → Properties → Check "Use Custom Audio Device" in OBS;
- Or add "Audio Input Capture" device to select the corresponding audio source.
Common problems and solutions:
- Black screen or no picture display
- Possible problem causes may include:
- HDCP (Digital Rights Management) of PS5 is not turned off;
- The adapter is not recognized by the computer;
- Poor connection or poor quality of HDMI or USB cable;
- Incorrect settings of the capture software.
Solution:
In PS5 settings, disable HDCP:
- Settings → System → HDMI → Disable "Enable HDCP".
- Replace with a high-quality HDMI cable to avoid using long or old cables;
- Try inserting the adapter into other USB 3.0 interfaces of the computer (try to avoid USB Hub);
- In OBS, re-add the "video capture device" and make sure to select the correct one (usually displayed as "USB Video", "USB3.0 Video", "HDMI Capture", etc.);
- Restart OBS or switch to other capture software (such as PotPlayer/VLC to test if it can display audio);
No sound or OBS has no audio input:
Possible reasons may include:
The capture card does not support embedded audio or audio input is not enabled;
OBS settings are improper;
The sound output is not transmitted from the PS5 to HDMI;
The Mac system does not grant audio access permission.
Solution:
- Right-click the video capture device in OBS → Properties → Check "Use custom audio device" and select the correct audio source;
- Or add "Audio Input Capture" in "Sources" → Select the corresponding audio device of the capture card (such as USB Audio, Digital Audio, etc.);
- Ensure that the audio output of the PS5 is HDMI: Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Set as "HDMI Device";
- Check if the audio is recognized using Windows sound settings or Mac's "Audio MIDI Settings";
- The OBS audio mixer is not muted the device or has enabled the monitoring function (Right-click the device → Advanced Audio Properties → Set "Monitoring and Output");
The audio synchronization is out of sync (delay)
Possible causes may include:
USB bandwidth is insufficient (USB 2.0 port);
The audio delay is not calibrated in OBS settings;
The inherent delay of the capture card.
Solution:
- Try to insert the USB 3.0 interface on the computer motherboard (especially for desktops);
- In OBS, add "Synchronization Offset": Mixer → Gear icon → Advanced Audio Properties → Add delay (such as 200ms, try and correct);
- OBS → Settings → Advanced → Rendering mode can try to switch to Direct3D 11 or OpenGL to see if it improves;
- Some users may experience lower latency when watching in real time using PotPlayer (suitable for non-live streaming purposes).
- The computer does not recognize the capture card / The device cannot install the driver
Possible reasons:
The capture card is not compatible with the USB 2.0 interface;
The computer fails to correctly recognize UVC devices (system-level problem);
USB cable is damaged or voltage is unstable;
macOS permissions are not enabled.
Solution:
- Replace the USB interface (USB 3.0 is preferred) or USB data cable;
- Check in Device Manager (Windows) or "About This Computer → System Report → USB" if the device name appears;
- In macOS system, grant permissions in System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Screen Recording & Microphone;
- Restart the computer; sometimes system loading errors can be restored by restarting;
- Confirm if it is a native driver capture card (no driver installation required, UVC standard device);
- Using a capture card with charging function cannot charge the device (such as iPad/Switch)
Solution:
- Confirm that the power adapter supports PD fast charging and has a power greater than 18W (recommend using the original or 65W or above fast charger);
- Insert the power in the correct order: charger → PD port → capture card, then connect the iPad/PC;
- Some devices such as Switch require stable power supply during the charging scene, low power may only recognize but not charge. If it is a dual Type-C interface model, please ensure that the PD identification port is connected to the power supply and not inserted in the wrong direction.
Additional note:
All our HDMI to USB acquisition cards support PS5. Just turn off HDCP and set the resolution to 1080p;
Different models support different video qualities and interfaces. It is recommended to check the supported list on the product detail page;
Mac users are advised to use QuickTime or OBS as the acquisition software;
Some Mac system permissions need to be manually enabled (System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Screen Recording)
